Serum Cholesterol Level in Toxemia of Pregnancy

Abstract
Measuring the total serum cholesterol and cholesterol-ester level of 20 cases of each pre-eclampsia and eclampsia by modified Carr¢¥s method along with the serum cholesterol level of mother and fetus in 8 post-partum eclampsia, the following results were obtained.
1) The total serum cholesterol level of pre-eclampsia patients was higher than normal, and the percentage of serum cholesterol ester level was within normal limits.
2) The total serum cholesterol level of eclampsia patient was markedly increased, but the percentage of cholesterol ester to the total serum cholesterol level was within normal limits.
3) The total serum cholesterol levels of 3 patients expired due to severe eclampsia were higher than 500 mg/dl and the cholesterol ester was only 40%. These will help determining the prognosis of eclampsia patients.
4) In post-partum eclampsia the total serum cholesterol level of mother was markedly increased comparing with that of fetus and the percentages of cholesterol ester both in mother and fetus were found to be increased.
